Cambridge Soccer Club Score Top Award
The volunteers behind the Cambridge Soccer Club were tonight recognised as the Supreme Winners at the Trustpower Waipa
District Community Awards.
Over 130 people gathered at Te Awamutu College this evening for the Awards, which were presented by Mayor Jim Mylchreest
and Trustpower Community Relations Manager Graeme Purches.
For winning the Supreme Award, the Cambridge Soccer Club received a framed certificate, a trophy and $1,500 prize money.
The Cambridge Soccer Club now has the opportunity to represent the district at the 2014 Trustpower National Community
Awards, which are being held in the Wellington region in March 2015.
In total, Trustpower has given away over $5,000 to various community groups through tonight’s Awards.
Trustpower Community Relations Representative Jess Somerville says the Cambridge Soccer Club aims to give all members
the opportunity to play at the highest level of their ability.
“Over the past five years this grassroots club has grown to one of the biggest junior club’s in the Waikato and Bay of
Plenty region. With over 650 people now belonging to this club they are well supported by a dedicated band of 50
volunteers. These volunteers help with everything from watering and maintaining the grounds to coaching, managing and
referring games to erecting seating for any one of the regional and national games they now play host too.
“Key to the success of this growing club is the enthusiasm and commitment of their volunteers who have had to step up to
cope with this growth, longer season and string of events they now play host to. A huge congratulations to this team for
transforming themselves into an extensive club that operates all year round, offers incredible support to its players of
all abilities and for keeping so many people active,” says Miss somerville.
Waipa District Mayor Jim Mylchreest says the Cambridge Soccer Club has gone from strength to strength.
“It’s wonderful through this Award to be able to acknowledge the huge hours these dedicated volunteers have committed to
training, maintaining the grounds and hosting the multitude of games they are now in the running for. A big
congratulations to this team for rising to the challenge time after time and supporting their players to such a high
level,” says Mayor Mylchreest.
The Awards are being presented at a function this evening, Monday 19 May 2014, at Te Awamutu College starting at 6pm.
