Ukuleles for issue at the Upper Hutt City Library
Upper Hutt’s City Library has moved beyond printed and digital media, and is now lending out ukuleles as popularity of
playing group grows.
UPPER HUTT, Wellington NZ, 2 MAY 2014—Due to the popularity of Upper Hutt City Library’s ukulele groups, the Library has
launched a musical collection of 20 colourful new ukuleles.
The new collection was established in response to an increasing number of customers reporting that they wanted to join
one of the groups but felt discouraged by having to buy an instrument first.
The Library’s new instruments are free to issue and have a six-week loan period.
“It’s great that you can just walk in, get an instrument, and strum along,” says Rhea Fohs, Library Host, while tuning
one of the new ukuleles at a beginner’s group session. “People are even more keen to join now that they can borrow the
instruments for free from the Library.”
“The ukes are fun. Our ukulele group started with eight people, now we’ve got three groups from beginners through to
experienced level! It’s just lovely to see people enjoy the instruments,” adds Helen Thomas, Host Team Leader at the
Library and enthusiastic member of UH Ukes.
Ukes for Beginners meets every Thursday from 5.00 – 5.30 pm at the Upper Hutt Central Library, followed by the
intermediate level and experienced UH Ukes from 5.50 – 6.50 pm.
UH Ukes will be giving a concert at the Library on Thursday 8 May, 2014 at 6.00 pm, opening the Library’s concert series
