Woman dies following Ashburton crash
Canterbury Police have confirmed that a woman has died in hospital following a serious crash in Ashburton on 18 April.
Janet Ethel MacFarlane, aged 79, of Redwoodtown, Marlborough, passed away at Christchurch Hospital on Friday [25 April].
Mrs MacFarlane had been a passenger in a vehicle involved in a head-on collision on Smallbone Drive, Ashburton, at
around 12.30pm on Friday 18 April.
Police say it is not yet confirmed whether her death is directly related to injuries sustained in the crash, or whether
other medical factors may have contributed.
Initial inquiries into the crash indicate that the driver of an oncoming vehicle, a Holden Commodore, was travelling
south on Smallbone Drive and crossed over the centre line into the path of the Honda Civic car in which Mrs MacFarlane
was a passenger.
Two other female passengers from the Honda were admitted to hospital following the crash. One, aged 69, has since been
discharged, while the other, aged 73, was transferred to Christchurch Hospital with a broken leg and is in a fairly
comfortable condition.
The driver of the Holden was also transferred to Christchurch Hospital where he remains in a fairly comfortable
condition.
A Police investigation into the crash is continuing and at this stage no decision has been made as to whether any
charges will be laid.
