Otago flood conditions update – Dunedin, North Otago and Strath Taieri
Heavy rain forecast for Dunedin, North Otago and the upper Strath Taieri today is likely to result in high river flows over the next few days.
River levels this morning have still been reasonably low, however, rain overnight has further saturated catchments which experienced heavy rainfall and high flows over Easter. The rainfall is expected to peak this afternoon and clear through the evening.
Flows in the Kyeburn, Shag, Water of Leith, and Silver Stream catchments have been rising steadily.
Flows in the Kakanui River at Clifton Falls, which peaked at a record 554 cubic metres per second on Good Friday, had not yet started to rise.
People are advised to watch out for rapidly rising streams and rivers, surface flooding, slips, and hazardous driving conditions.
Farmers and residents in these areas are advised to keep up to date with river and rainfall information through the ORC water info webpage: www.orc.govt.nz/waterinfo or by phoning 0800 426 463.
ORC flood managers are continuously monitoring rainfall and river levels. Flood alerts and updates will be issued as new information develops through Twitter, Facebook, and our website www.orc.govt.nz
