Firearms incident in Wellington
Sunday, 27 April 2014 - 4:29am
At 1am this morning, Wellington police were advised of a male who had discharged a firearm near the Sirocco Apartments on Church Street, in Wellington CBD. It was reported that the male was heard yelling before the firearm was discharged.
He was then seen walking up some stairs at the end of Church Street that lead up to The Terrace. Several witnesses who had heard the male yelling and the firearm being discharged, saw the male later enter an apartment building on The Terrace. Police cordoned this address and waited for AOS to arrive.
A short section of The Terrace was closed for nearly two hours while the police cordon was in place. AOS later arrested a male at the address, who was there with a female associate. A 35 year old male was taken in to custody without incident and will be appearing in the Wellington District Court on Monday on firearms related charges.
No one was injured and at this stage it isn’t thought that any property was damaged as a result of the firearm being discharged. It is believed that two shots were discharged, possibly from a shotgun.
A firearm has not yet been located and Wellington Police will continue to search for this in the morning. If anyone has any information regarding this incident, they can contact Wellington Police on (04) 381200 or information can be given anonymously by contacting Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.
