Police release photo of person of interest in kidnapping case
Brett Makiri
Police investigating the violent kidnapping of a 29 year old woman are releasing a photo of Brett Makiri in an effort to
locate him as soon as possible.
Mr Makiri is a known associate of the victim and her partner and a person of interest in this case, says Detective
Senior Sergeant John Sutton of Auckland Central Police.
On Monday evening, the woman was driven to the Coromandel instead of to a friend’s house in a suburb near to her home in
Glen Innes. She was assaulted various times throughout the journey and managed to escape near Coromandel Town when the
stolen car ran out of petrol.
“This was a frightening ordeal for the victim and it’s vital to the investigation to catch up with Mr Makiri as soon as
possible,” says Detective Senior Sergeant Sutton. “Anyone with information that may lead to the apprehension of Mr
Makiri is urged to contact Police.”
Mr Makiri has links to various addresses in West and South Auckland and may be in the Waikato, Coromandel or Auckland
areas. Police have a warrant for his arrest in relation to a failure to appear in Waitakere District court on 17 March,
and wish to interview him about this week’s incident as soon as possible.
The victim has been interviewed by Police and assessed by a doctor. Victim Support is assisting her and her family.
Police advise that Brett Makiri is considered dangerous and should not be approached by the public. Anyone who sees him
should ring 111 immediately, or the Auckland City Crime Squad can be contacted on 09 302 6557. Information can be
provided anonymously to the organisation Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
