Heavy rain causes some flooding issue in Levin
Heavy rain caused some flooding issues in parts of Levin on Tuesday afternoon and evening.
A car was stranded after driving into a flooded part of Argyle Avenue. A house in Lynch Grove was flooded, along with a garage in Kennedy Drive. The area around Easton Way and Okarito Avenue was also impacted, as was north-eastern Levin in general.
Horowhenua District Council's Operations Manager Glen O'Connor says a lot of the surface ponding was caused by the short burst of heavy rain and by leaves and other debris blocking stormwater grates and sump tops, after last Thursday night's storm.
"Council's contractors have been working hard since last Thursday night and are doing an excellent job, but it will take time to get sorted," he said.
"It will be a week or more to get all the branches and debris removed from the streets and berms, while the removal of damaged trees will take at least a couple of weeks."
Mr O'Connor says residents could help the clean-up efforts by sweeping the kerb and channel outside their properties and ensuring nearby stormwater grates were also clear of debris.
He says war memorials and cemeteries will be attended to today and tomorrow to ensure they are in good condition for ANZAC Day this Friday.
