Get on yer bike for the inaugural Wellington Easter night ride
Cyclists are invited to take part in Wellington’s inaugural Easter ride tomorrow evening from Oriental Bay to Mt Victoria – via the Miramar Peninsula and Lyall Bay.
Simon Kennett, Greater Wellington Regional Council’s Active Transport and Road Safety Coordinator, says the 20km ride will include an Easter Egg hunt and some hot soup at the Mt Victoria summit.
“It’s a fun thing to do to celebrate the Easter season and chocolate, and it’s a great time of year to raise people’s awareness of how they can still ride their bicycles at night and keep as safe as possible.
“High visibility is your best bet for safe cycling, running and walking in low light conditions.”
The Regional Council tests a selection of bicycle lights each year to let people know which ones are the most effective and provide the best value for money.
“We’ve also checked out 20 reflective garments to see how effective they are at getting drivers’ attention. The brighter the lights of the approaching vehicle, the brighter the reflector should look to the driver.”
Results of the light tests and information about reflective gear is available at www.gw.govt.nz/be-safe-be-seen
The inaugural Wellington Easter ride is a free event. Just turn up with your bike, helmet and reflective gear at Freyberg Pool at 6pm.
