Woman dies after car hit by rockfall
At about 10:30 am today a car heading North on State Highway Three between Mahoenui and Pio Pio was struck by a rockfall which fell from a cliff above the roadway.
There were two women in the car. The passenger, aged 76 died at the scene. The driver escaped with minimal injuries.
The road at the scene is closed and will remain closed for several days while the area is made safe.
Traffic between Pio Pio and Mahoenui is being re-routed via Aria and Totoro Roads.
