Police urge caution for horse traffic
Police are urging Horse of the Year traffic leaving Hawke's Bay today to be extra careful on the roads after a crash on
the Napier-Taupo Rd.
The crash involving a car and a horse truck occurred on SH5 near the intersection with Ellis Wallace Rd about 20 minutes
from Napier at about 12.30pm. One person is trapped in the car but there are no other injuries to any of the other
vehicle occupants. The Lowe rescue helicopter has been sent to the scene.
The highway is not closed at this stage, but there could be some short delays.
A large number of horse trucks are due to leave Hawke's Bay this afternoon as the annual Horse of the Year show comes to
an end. The show attracts around 70,000 people to Hastings, including domestic and international competitors and
spectators.
Police are urging all drivers, especially of horse vehicles, to be extra vigilant and patient on the roads as they leave
the area today. SH5 and SH2 north and south of Hawke's Bay are likely to be congested with horse traffic this afternoon.
