Get to know your neighbours
Whether it is introducing yourself over the fence, having a cup of tea or arranging a play date for your kids at the
local park – Neighbours Day is the perfect opportunity to get to know your neighbours better.
Happening 29-30 March, Neighbours Day is a national campaign that aims to turn strangers into neighbours and streets
into neighbourhoods throughout Aotearoa.
Councillor Cathy Casey, Community Development and Safety Committee Chair, says getting to know your neighbours is often
something people think about but never quite get round to doing.
“I encourage everyone to use Neighbours Day as a great excuse to get to know those who live near you a bit better. Even
introducing yourself and knowing your neighbour’s name is a great place to start.
“Neighbours Day is not only about being friendly and having some fun, it is about creating safer communities. If you
know the people on your street, and keep an eye out for each other, everyone will be better off,” says Cr Casey.
Auckland Council Local Boards are supporting Neighbours Day events in their local communities. Activities planned around
Auckland this Neighbours Day include street BBQs, treasure hunts and community garden open days.
