Runaway Success At AMI Round The Bays

The sun came out to welcome over 14,100 participants that gathered at Frank Kitts Park on Sunday morning to await the sound of the AMI Round the Bays starting cannon. The iconic Wellington event again saw record numbers participating, drawing the biggest crowd the event has seen in its history.

Despite its extended capacity, the event sold out in the week leading up to the race for the third consecutive year.

Organised by Sport Wellington and supported by AMI Insurance, over 300 staff and volunteers helped make the day possible. Event Director James King says “the day would not be possible without the hard work of all our volunteers, as well as significant contributions from a number of fantastic sponsors and stakeholders.”

The event catered for all abilities with many community organisations, including Sport Wellington’s Active Families and Green Prescription, joining in. King says he is pleased with how the day went, “it’s great to see people of all ages coming along and getting active, it’s very inspiring to see the pride on people’s faces as they cross the finish line after all the hard work they have put in.”

Over $40,000 was raised for the Malaghan Institute of Medical Research, the events Official Charity Partner. Over 230 fundraisers joined the ‘Run for Research’ in support of New Zealand’s leading independent medical research facility.

The record numbers gathered at Kilbirnie Park for prize-giving and an after party, entertained by 9- piece hip hop, soul and funk fusion group Brockaflower and another local talent Drax Project.

Participants were also met with the Southern Cross family zone, the TBI Health Recovery Zone, BBQs, entertainment and spot prizes.

While the 6.5km and 10km distances were correct, unfortunately the Half Marathon was an extra 600m in length. Sport Wellington apologises to all participants who took part in the Lenco Half Marathon for the inconvenience and assures everyone that measures will be put in place next year to ensure the same mistakes are not made.

Results from the race were printed in todays The Dominion Post and are now available online. Those keen to participate in next year’s event can mark Sunday, 22 February 2015 on their calendar and are encouraged to get in as soon as registrations open to ensure their spot at AMI Round the Bays 2015.
