Construction of music and arts centre set to begin
Auckland Council has selected its key building partner for the construction of the Glen Innes Music and Arts Centre for
Young People.
Hawkins Construction was awarded the contract and is expected to be on site on the 24th of March.
Maungakiekie-Tāmaki Local Board Chair Simon Randall says the announcement is an important step towards the construction.
“This is a significant project for the Maungakiekie-Tāmaki Local Board and we are delighted that construction is about
to begin. The centre will provide much needed community space for young people to express their creativity and talent.”
Auckland Council Senior Projects Manager Alasdair Nelson says the building firm was selected for its reputation of high
quality service.
“Hawkins Construction has successfully delivered a range of council projects in the past, including the Auckland Art
Gallery.”
The Glen Innes Music and Arts Centre for Young People is to be located at 96-108 Line Rd, Glen Innes (next to the Glen
Innes Library), and the Maungakiekie-Tāmaki Local Board are leading the $8 million development.
Construction is expected to be complete February 2015.
Development of the centre sees the realisation of a long held community dream for a purpose built music and arts
facility. The two storey building will feature a dance studio, music tuition and rehearsal spaces, and visual art
workshops and classrooms. It also includes an auditorium that will have the capacity to accommodate up to 200 people.
