Tax seminar to help newcomers and migrants

Tax seminar to help newcomers and migrants

Local migrants and newcomers are being given an opportunity to learn more about the New Zealand tax system at a special seminar next month.

The Settlement Support tax seminar, presented by Inland Revenue Department’s (IRD) Ian Bushett, is on Wednesday 19 March from 5.30pm to 7pm at IRD offices on Pukaki Street.

Topics will include getting an IRD number, Working for Families, donation tax credits (rebate), payroll, KiwiSaver, tax returns, and online services.

Rotorua District Council Settlement Support coordinator, Heather McAllister, said while the seminar is aimed at newcomers and migrants, employers and anyone interested in helping migrants settle into the community are encouraged to attend.

“Taxes are a concern for some migrants as they worry about whether they’ve followed the correct procedures and completed the right documents.

“Different rules apply for people on temporary visas which they need to be aware of. New Zealand employers should also be aware that migrants on work visas are not eligible for KiwiSaver so these payments should not be deducted from their wages.

“There are many grey areas for migrants and newcomers who pay tax in New Zealand and this seminar is an excellent opportunity to get their questions answered.”
