Huge Weekend for Auckland
NETWORK SUMMARY for week ending 16 February 2014
Despite a very busy weekend in Auckland with several major events running, there were only a couple of minor incidents
on Vector’s network to deal with.
ELECTRICITY
Six car v pole accidents occurred this week requiring us to replace poles in Papakura South, Glen Eden, Devonport, East
Tamaki, Sandringham and Ladies Mile. The incident in Papakura required an emergency shutdown of power in the area which
affected around 80 customers.
GAS
Contractors struck pipes while working in Mangere, Kohimarama, Beachaven and Puhinui. The areas required ventilation and
repairs were made quickly.
PROJECTS
We are making good progress with the $ 8.6 million upgrade project of the Birkdale substation on Auckland’s North Shore
which will see the existing outdoor switchyard converted into a more compact indoor switch room. The last of the new
33kV and 11kV switchgear will be installed next week. Construction of an architecturally designed transformer bay, which
will house two large 20 MVA transformers, will begin in June. In addition, a new cable bridge, retaining wall, fencing
and landscaping, to ensure the substation blends in with its environment, will complete the project.
Meanwhile, a key substation on the northern part of our network has been given the special treatment. The first phase of
the refurbishment of the Warkworth substation has been completed with a 75 metre long retaining wall constructed around
the substation. The wall comprises 40 piles, 750mm in diameter, driven up to 12 metres into sandstone bedrock, joined
together at ground level by a reinforced concrete capping beam. Phase 2 of the project, now under way, involves
rebuilding the substation perimeter fence to enhance security and allow easier vehicle access to the site.
