Tragedy at Pukehina Beach

Women Drowns - Pukehina Beach - Bay of Plenty
Emergency Services were called to Pukehina Beach at the end of Rogers Road this afternoon after reports were received two persons were in trouble in the
surf.
A 45 year old Male who had been fishing off the beach and has entered into
the surf for a swim and got into difficulties in a rip about 100 meters
from the shore.
The male's partner went into help but got into difficulties herself.
Emergencies services responded and a rescue operation was initiated with a
rescue swimmer, a jet ski and other staff.
The female aged 53 years was pulled from the surf but was unresponsive and
efforts to revive her were unsuccessful. The male was able to be rescued.
The couple are both from Rotorua
The matter will be the subject of a coroner's inquest
