$871 Per Household to Fix Wellington’s Old Town Hall

Responding to today’s Fairfax report that work to earthquake strengthen the Wellington town hall has been halted in the face of a $17 million budget
blowout, Jordan Williams, Executive Director of the Taxpayers’ Union, says:
“Why hasn't the Council looked at a cheaper town hall built from scratch? Spending $60 million on a building that is
barely fit for purpose doesn’t make sense.”
“The existing town hall is beautiful, but at a cost of $871 per household to bring up to code, surely it's unaffordable.
It's a town hall, not a national monument.”
“We understand from a property expert that replacing the existing hall with one that is more fit for purpose could be
done for a lot less.”
