$871 Per Household to Fix Wellington’s Old Town Hall
14 February 2014
Responding to today’s Fairfax report that work to earthquake strengthen the Wellington town hall has been halted in the face of a $17 million budget blowout, Jordan Williams, Executive Director of the Taxpayers’ Union, says:
“Why hasn't the Council looked at a cheaper town hall built from scratch? Spending $60 million on a building that is barely fit for purpose doesn’t make sense.”
“The existing town hall is beautiful, but at a cost of $871 per household to bring up to code, surely it's unaffordable. It's a town hall, not a national monument.”
“We understand from a property expert that replacing the existing hall with one that is more fit for purpose could be done for a lot less.”
The New Zealand Taxpayers’ Union is a non-partisan activist group, dedicated to being the voice for Kiwi taxpayers in the corridors of power. It’s here to fight government waste and make sure New Zealanders get value for money from their tax dollar.
