Tarawera Landing beach re-opened to public
Rotorua District Council (RDC) has re-opened a 50 metre stretch of beach at Tarawera Landing which had been closed for a
number of weeks as a public health precaution after a sewage discharge was detected.
RDC Infrastructure Services Group manager Andrew Bell said the full length of the beach is again available for the
public to use and temporary warning signs have now been removed.
“We are appreciative of the cooperation we’ve received from local residents and visitors while we investigated these
issues.
“Toi Te Ora Public Health Service has been testing lake water quality on a regular basis and tell us that their test
results are now back to acceptable levels and in line with microbiological water quality guidelines. However regular
testing will be continuing to ensure lake water in the vicinity remains safe for lake users.
Mr Bell said extensive investigations and a rigorous sampling programme had revealed a split septic tank inlet which has
now been replaced.
The council is also is working on an upgrade of the current drainage system at the site to eliminate the risk of future
contamination.
