Dig It! Garden Party

Dig It! Royal Oak Organic Garden invites locals, their friends and neighbours to a free ‘love your neighbourhood’ themed
garden party from 10am – 12pm, Saturday 15 February at 14 Erson Avenue, Royal Oak.
“Royal Oak is such a fantastic community, so this year we’re looking at what we can give back. We wanted to create an
opportunity to celebrate what’s great about our part of Auckland. We hope the Garden Party will encourage people to
connect with each other, learn a bit more about our area and have some fun in the process,” explains Garden’s Supervisor
Julia Watson.
As well as free children’s activities and a morning tea donated by local wholefoods retailer Huckleberry Farms,
Historian Lisa Truttman will share Royal Oak’s rich and occasionally novel heritage, a suburb perhaps most famously home
to one of New Zealand’s earliest zoos!
There will be plenty to keep keen gardeners entertained, with a garden tour and landscape architect John Allan on hand
to explore how growing food in public spaces can help build strong communities.
Visitors will be gifted a free seedling raised by the dedicated group of volunteers who tend the extensive gardens.
Ms Watson encourages all comers to the event. “We see ourselves as a real resource for our neighbourhood, so you don’t
have to be an expert gardener to come along! If we can encourage people to grow their own produce then that’s great, but
if for others we are simply a space where they can sit, relax and escape from the city, then we’d consider that success
too,” she says.
