Council extends safe zone in CBD

Published: Mon 10 Feb 2014 03:50 PM
SafeZone, a short-term designated safe area in downtown Auckland which watches over those who have over indulged in alcohol or drugs, will now continue to operate until 8 March.
Located in Queen Elizabeth Square, opposite the Britomart Transport Centre the SafeZone was due to finish at the end of January but has now been extended over weekends hosting events including the League Nines, the Eminem concert and ‘O week’, the university student orientation week.
Councillor Cathy Casey, Chair Community Development and Safety Committee says the extended dates are part of Auckland Council’s commitment to provide a safe CBD.
“There are a number of events coming up we felt might need extra support as people are likely to hit the CBD after an event to continue the party. Safe and sensible behaviour is always encouraged but it is good to know youth volunteers assisted by health care experts are also available, providing peer support and advice,” she says.
SafeZone will be based in Queen Elizabeth Square, opposite the Britomart Transport Centre in the central city and will be operational from 10pm – 5am on the following weekends:
• Friday 14 February & Saturday 15 February
• Friday 28 February & Saturday 1 March
• Friday 7 March & Saturday 8 March
SafeZone is a joint initiative between Auckland Council, ACC, St John, Red Frogs NZ (youth volunteers), Health Promotion Agency and the Heart of the City.
