Barracks restoration architect announced
Auckland Council has selected its key design partner for the restoration of the barracks at Fort Takapuna.
Matthews & Matthews Architects Ltd has been selected to continue working on the project.
The firm has previously completed Fort Takapuna’s conservation plan and has already produced initial design drawings
during the project’s early planning stages.
Auckland Council’s community facilities manager, Kevin Marriott, says the architect firm was selected for its reputation
of high quality service.
“Matthews & Matthews has successfully delivered a range of council heritage projects in the past, including work on Pah Homestead
and the Parnell Baths refurbishment.
“With their previous work on the Fort Takapuna barracks project and their experience in working on heritage
architecture, we believe they are extremely well placed to design the refurbishment of this significant project,” Mr
Marriott says.
Devonport-Takapuna Local Board Chairperson Mike Cohen says the announcement is an important step towards the
restoration.
“Fort Takapuna is a significant heritage site in our area and we are eager to see the two barrack buildings restored in
time to mark the commemoration of Passchendaele.
“They will also provide a valuable addition for our local people to use as a community space.
“We look forward to working very closely with Matthews & Matthews Architects to complete this special project.”
