Next stage of Grafton cycleway nearing completion
The NZ Transport Agency says central Auckland’s busy Alten Road has been re-opened but drivers, cyclists and walkers
still need to take care until the next stage of the nearby Grafton Gully cycleway is completed.
Alten Road connects the CBD with Stanley Street (State Highway 16) in Grafton Gully, and the Transport Agency’s safety
upgrade includes an extra right hand turn from Alten Road onto SH16 and a new signalised crossing on Alten Road itself
for cyclists and walkers.
“We’ve reopened the intersection but still have a few things to finish off before its complete. We ask those who walk
and cycle through the intersection to take a bit more care until the project is complete early next week,” says the
Transport Agency’s Highways Manager, Tommy Parker.
The Alten Road crossing connects a 300 metre section of the new cycleway opened last June with the recently completed
shared path for walkers and cyclists in Churchill Street.
The Transport Agency plans to have the entire 1.9 kilometre-long extension of the Northwestern Cycleway completed later
this year.
“Once we have the necessary consents, construction of the tunnel beneath Wellesley Street East will start, while the
rest of the extension is well underway and on-track to be opened in September,” Mr Parker says.
Other improvements to the Northwestern Cycleway are currently underway on the Western Ring Route Projects along SH16 at
the causeway and the Lincoln Road and Te Atatu Road interchanges. Improvement to the cycleway is also part of the
upgrade of the St Lukes interchange due to start in autumn.
