The story behind Otaki’s “hidden gem”
See how a major flood protection project has resulted in stunning environmental enhancement by joining the Explore
Chrystalls Bend guided walk along the banks of Otaki River, Sunday 9 February.
The once unkempt Chrystalls Bend became the site of Greater Wellington Regional Council flood protection works,
resulting in funding for environmental enhancement of the area carried out by the Friends of Otaki River with crucial
support from Winstone Aggregates and Kapiti Coast District Council.
“The story behind the development of the Chrystalls Bend stopbank – which protects Otaki from flooding – and the
transformation of Chrystalls Bend lagoon to a community asset is an interesting one, and we’re looking forward to
telling it,” says Max Lutz, Chair of the Friends of Otaki River.
On the day, members of the Friends of Otaki River and Greater Wellington’s river ranger will lead a pleasant walk along
the Chrystalls Bend walkway to the lagoon, with plenty of opportunities for participants to find out more about
Chrystalls Bend and ask questions.
