Whakatane teen sets sights on Taumarunui’s Kururau Krusher multisport race
Sixteen year old Hayden Wilde from Whakatane’s Trident High School may be new to multisport but is undaunted he’s chosen
one of the North Island’s most gruelling multisport events as his first full course, the 109km Kururau Krusher.
Wilde already has an impressive running resume, regularly placing in age group results and holding very respectable
overall rankings across half marathons, trail runs and duathlons.
While the 2014 Kururau Krusher line-up includes a new 60km duathlon course, the novice multisporter is ready to go the
full distance alone, albeit with some nerves for the grade 2 rapids on the 23km Whanganui River kayak.
“I’ve only been in the kayak a couple of months so I’m a bit shaky about the paddle”, admits Wilde.
All traces of nerves seem to stop there with the teen keen to repeat his blistering pace from the 2013 Motu Challenge
and post the fastest overall run time for the Kururau Krusher also.
“Overall goal is just to finish” claims Wilde, before adding “and to get the fastest run time”.
There will be stiff competition from the popular team event which attracts a strong local field each year. Race
organisers are also keen to see more individual and team multisporters from further afield discovering Taumarunui
Multisport Club’s best kept secret.
“It’s always positive to see young ones coming through” says Club Chairperson Ray Wright. “Hopefully this shakes up some
of the locals and we see a strong secondary school field”.
