Dog attack owner comes forward
The owner of the dog that allegedly attacked the teenage girl in Whangamata and then killed a small dog the following day has now come forward and is cooperating with the investigation.
The Bay of Plenty owner used the dog, confirmed as a German Wirehaired Pointer, for hunting, and was on holiday in Whangamata. The incidents occurred while his wife was walking the dog on a lead when he was out of town.
The owner has taken responsibility for the actions of his dog and had the dog humanely euthanized earlier this afternoon.
The investigation will continue in light of this new information and we'll make a decision on probable legal action in due course.
The woman walking the dog at the times of the attacks is extremely upset by what has occurred and has said that she was not initially aware of the injuries to the teenage girl until she read about the incident in the media.
We're grateful for the media support in helping us solve this mystery.
