Guest nights remain at high level – Media release
Friday 17 January
The trend for national guest nights spent in short-term commercial accommodation remains at a record high level,
Statistics New Zealand said today. However, the rate of growth continues to show signs of easing.
Trends are rising for North Island and domestic guest nights, but the trend for the South Island appears to have
flattened. Although the trend remains negative for international guest nights, the rate of decline has softened.
"November 2013 was a good month for international visitor arrivals," industry and labour statistics manager Clara
Eatherley said. "This is reflected in the large increase in international guest nights."
In November 2013 (after removing seasonal variation):
• International guest nights rose 7.1 percent, and domestic guest nights fell 0.7 percent.
• New Zealand guest nights rose 1.7 percent, following a rise of 0.5 percent in October.
• North Island guest nights rose 2.5 percent, and South Island guest nights rose 0.7 percent.
• Guest nights rose for holiday parks, backpacker accommodation, and hotels, but were nearly flat for motels.
The Accommodation Survey records the number of guests staying in hotels, motels, backpacker accommodation, and holiday
parks in New Zealand each month.
