Hamilton Arrests

Between 8:30 and 9:15 this morning Waikato Police received three reports of a group of up to 20 people loitering on Grey
Street, Hamilton East, waiting for a retail shop to open. This group was making people in the area feel uncomfortable
to the extent that they rang Police.
Police deployed staff to the area to try to maintain public safety and prevent any offences from being committed.
Just after 9:30am one member of this group approached a Police Constable and attempted to start a fight with him. He
went away without incident, but returned a few minutes later and tried again, at which time he was arrested.
An associate of this person ran to his assistance and jumped on the back of the Constable. Police back up arrived
shortly after and both men were taken into custody.
Inspector Greg Nicholls, the Hamilton City Area Commander, said that he was extremely impressed to hear of two members
of the public who jumped in to assist this Constable, until other Police staff arrived. Inspector Nicholls has already
rung these two people to thank them for their efforts, and said it is extremely pleasing to see members of the public
who will help police staff when they need assistance.
This is the second time in just a week, after members of the public came to the assistance of a Senior Sergeant, who was
chasing an offender through the Hamilton CBD after intervening in a domestic on Thursday.
Two Hamilton men, aged 19 and 23, will be appearing in the Hamilton District Court this afternoon charged with offences
including Resisting Arrest and Assault Police.
