Muritai Track work delayed and public meeting planned
Council is delaying work on a planned route change to Muritai Track at East Harbour Regional Park following requests
from the public.
Changes which would bring the track up to national standards, were signalled and consulted on in the Long Term Plan and
the Parks Network Plan. However, some Eastbourne residents have expressed concerns that the alignment of the new track
significantly changes the experience and council has decided to postpone work until it has had an opportunity to discuss
concerns with track users.
General Manager of the Regional Council’s Environment Group, Nigel Corry says a lot of thought goes into planning track
network to ensure that things like maintenance, safety, cost and access are balanced and achieve the best outcomes for
all those who use our parks, and it is also very important to consider the interests of local communities who use and
enjoy the tracks on a regular basis.
“Track locations and standards are of interest to local communities. We are keen to have further discussion with
interested locals and track users about why the track work is being proposed, and how concerns might be addressed.
Mr Corry says the work which was scheduled to begin this week has been put on hold and a public meeting will be planned
for late January and will be advertised in local papers.
