Council praised for lakeside clean-up
Rotoiti residents have complimented Rotorua District Council for cleaning up rubbish around lakeside houses and holiday
homes, and keeping areas clean and tidy over the Christmas and New Year period.
The praise was given out at last week’s annual general meeting of the Rotoiti Ratepayers’ Association (2 January),
attended by Rotorua mayor Steve Chadwick.
Mrs Chadwick said residents were very complimentary of the council’s maintenance unit Castlecorp and of the work staff
had done in keeping lake areas in good condition over the busy holiday season.
“Unfortunately a few people are not as responsible as we would like them to be and are careless about where they discard
their rubbish. It’s always a big challenge for the council to keep on top of the levels of rubbish left lying around
during the busy summer holiday period when the number of people enjoying our lakes increases substantially.
Mrs Chadwick said council teams made a concerted effort across the district to keep all places used by summer
holidaymakers as clean and tidy as possible.
“So I was very pleased to hear first-hand from locals that they were appreciative of the efforts of council staff
working around our lakes, and I’m grateful for the feedback from them. I’m also proud of the extra effort put in by our
Castlecorp team at a time when many other people are enjoying their holiday breaks.
“This includes our rubbish collectors who have worked tirelessly throughout the holiday season, including on Christmas
Day, Boxing Day and New Year’s Day, to ensure rubbish bags were promptly collected from kerbsides.
