Save water for a chance to star in GWRC’s summer water conservation campaign
We’re heading into peak water-use season, so this week Greater Wellington Regional Council is kicking off its summer
water conservation campaign with a competition to encourage household water-saving.
The regional council is offering residents in the Wellington region the chance to be part of its summer water
conservation drive by sharing their best water saving tip. The winner will have their tip turned into a print ad,
complete with a cartoon character based on their likeness.
Water Supply General Manager, Chris Laidlow, says he’d like people to think a bit more about water conservation during
summer.
“January and February are typically the hottest, most settled months of the year – it’s also the time when water use
usually peaks, and this can put pressure on the supply” says Laidlow.
“Although we’ve seen water use decline over the last couple of years, it’s still important to save water. If the
community can maintain a lower level of water use, then a new water storage facility won’t be needed as soon, which will
save ratepayers’ money.”
Laidlow says that increased garden watering is a big contributor to the rise in demand for water over the summer months,
so care with water in the garden can make a big difference.
“Easy measures to use a bit less, such as mulching garden beds to slow evaporation and fitting a trigger nozzle to your
hose will help. And there are simple things people can do indoors too, like fixing leaks quickly or turning the tap off
while you brush your teeth.”
“We know from last year’s drought that plenty of people chipped in to save water – now’s the chance to share those tips
with us, and maybe get your tip turned into an ad.”
