Remember – Share the Road
Remember – Share the
Road
Dunedin (Friday, 8 November 2013) – Scooters, skateboards, horses and vintage cars will be among the forms of transport on the move during Sunday’s Share the Road Parade.
The parade will launch the Dunedin City Council’s Share the Road campaign, which encourages all road users to be considerate so everyone can use the road safely.
DCC Safe and Sustainable Travel Co-ordinator Charlotte Flaherty says, “The parade offers an opportunity for many different road user groups to get together and celebrate each other and our transport system.
“People assume the road is for motorised transport only, but it is used by numerous groups, such as horse riders, cyclists and pedestrians as well.”
The parade will start outside the Dental School in Great King Street at 2.30pm. It will travel along Frederick and George Streets and arrive in the Octagon at 3pm. A Master of Ceremonies will give a commentary as the various groups arrive at the Octagon.
The parade will showcase people using a wide range of transport methods, including mobility scooters, skateboards, bicycles, motorbikes, wheelchairs, buses, hand bikes, cars and a horse and wagon, as well as people walking. There is a ‘transport through the ages’ theme so spectators will enjoy seeing everything from vintage fire engines to the newest Rolls Royce coupe – the only one in the South Island.
Mrs Flaherty says the parade will give different types of road users the opportunity to travel safely together. Copies of the new Share the Road brochure, and other safety information, will be given out to parade participants and spectators.
“I really encourage the public to come along and support the parade and our road safety messages.”
Two new road safety trusts have been created in Dunedin recently to alert road users to specific sets of needs. These are the Visually Impaired Charitable Trust Aotearoa NZ (VICTA) and the Horse Riders Road Safety Trust. Both groups will be represented at Sunday’s parade.
