A Time to Remember
Dunedin (Friday 1 November 2013) – The Armistice, the ceremonial end to the World War One hostilities, will be remembered in Dunedin at the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month with a service at the Cenotaph, Queens Gardens.
The Reverend Dr Tony Martin, Officiating Chaplain to Reserve Forces HMNZS Toroa and 2/4 RNZIR, will conduct the service. The guest speaker will be University of Otago Professor of History Tom Brooking.
Two minutes’ silence will begin on the 11th chime of the Municipal Chambers clock. The chime will be accompanied by a salute from the Robbie Burns Cannon in the Upper Octagon and a single 25lb Howitzer gun positioned at the Cenotaph, fired by the Dunedin Gunners Association. At the end of the two minutes, the Howitzer will fire a second and final shot.
The Balmacewen Intermediate School Choir will then sing a hymn. A P-51 Mustang aeroplane will fly over the city, including the Montecillo War Veterans Home, carrying messages of remembrance written by students from Dunedin intermediate schools.
These messages will reflect the students’ perspective of remembrance. The messages will be on display at the Dunedin City Library from Wednesday 13 November.
