Police will be conducting an area canvas tomorrow morning along a stretch of State Highway 6 where a 22-year-old man died in a crash at around 6.25am this morning.
Police will be at the scene on the Lake Hawea-Albert Town Road, about 12km from Wanaka, from around 6am to 7am tomorrow stopping vehicles to ask drivers if they were on the road at a similar time, and saw either a dark blue Subaru legacy station wagon travelling towards Wanaka or a white 4 x 4 late model ute heading in the opposite direction towards Hawea.
The driver of a dark blue Subaru legacy station wagon travelling towards Wanaka suffered fatal injuries after being struck by an object that smashed through the windscreen of his car. His female passenger was uninjured in the incident.
Police say they are still working to determine exactly what the object was and although they have searched extensively for it at the scene of the crash today, it's not yet been located.
"It's still a bit of a mystery as to what the object was and we will be searching the scene again tomorrow," Detective Sergeant Brian Cameron said.
"We still very much want the help of members of the public to help us piece together what exactly has occurred," he said.
Police still want to talk with anyone who might have seen a white well-sided late model 4 x 4 ute heading out of Wanaka on the north side of the Maungawera Hill towards Hawea some time around 6.15am to 6.45am this morning. The ute may have been in the vicinity at the time the incident occurred and Police would like to talk with the driver.
People with any information can contact Wanaka Police on 03 443 7272 or their nearest Police station.
No further details about the man who died in the crash will be released at this stage. A post-mortem will be carried out in the next few days.
