Love coffee? Love our community? Then you’ll love Can for a Coffee
Taupō’s iconic café, Replete, have always been early adopters when it comes to being on trend with the food and coffee
scene, and they are excited to launch the ‘Can for a Coffee’ movement from next week.
“It’s a pretty simple concept,” says Replete owner, Chris Johnston. “Bring in a can of food and we’ll exchange it for a
cup of coffee. Every can of food gets donated to Taupō Foodbank who will ensure it goes to those in our community who
need it most.”
"My son Oliver and two friends recently opened the world’s first "Can for a Coffee" cafe called Locals in Ponsonby,”
said Chris.
Supported in Auckland by Caffe L’Affare, the Locals team are keen to see the concept spread.
"Our motivation is pretty simple: We want to encourage businesses, whether coffee related or otherwise to help meet real
needs in the local community. We believe that as business owners, we owe a responsibility to society at large. We would
love to see more and more businesses that operate in a manner that is both profitable in the traditional sense and
profitable to their surrounding community," says Locals Co-founder, Joshua Wong.
Chris Johnston agrees wholeheartedly with this sentiment.
“Replete’s been part of the Taupō business community for over 20 years, and we’ve supported so many different groups and
initiatives over that time. However, like many businesses we often don’t get to see where our donations or sponsorship
is being spent. What I love about ‘Can for a Coffee’ is the simplicity of the exchange. We can be making a really
valuable contribution to our local community, and our customers will feel good about the trade too,” said Chris. “It’s a
great win-win.”
With over 1400 likes on the Facebook page in less than a month, the ‘Can for a Coffee’ movement is definitely gaining
traction and Chris is pleased to be the only café in Taupō that supports this exchange programme that in turns supports
the Taupō community at large.
You can trade a can of food for a cup of coffee at Replete Café every Tuesday morning from 8am to 9.30am starting from
Tuesday 1 October.
