Waterfront Development Plans to Showcase at Theatre Royal event.
Friday 13th will be lucky for those joining Nelson Mayor, Aldo Miccio and Councillor Pete Rainey at the Theatre Royal
for a special event open to all which will showcase the proposed waterfront upgrade.
The event will provide an opportunity for Councillors, developers and members of the public to view and consider
opportunities to safe guard the waterfront precinct, providing a long-term vision and securing future possibilities for
the area.
Mayor Miccio is championing the benefits and opportunities for the community and local businesses, whilst looking to
provide a safe attractive environment that preserves Nelson’s heritage buildings.
“Nelson is increasingly perceived as the number one destination to visit by national and international tourists. Any
investment and enhancements to our waterfront will secure the future direction for this iconic waterfront precinct and
everyone’s enjoyment of it.”
Irving Smith Jack Architects have prepared the concept drawings for several Council owned sites on Wakefield Quay
(previously occupied by Four Seasons and Reliance Engineering) offering a multitude of benefits for the Nelson
community. Concept plans show an attractive area intended for retail, hospitality and recreation, with increased
parking and shared pathway connections between the waterfront and the city.
Councillor Pete Rainey says they have consulted with Port Nelson who have said they will be looking at slight boundary
adjustments which would enable greater access to the sites and the water, as well as the potential for sympathetic
development of the historic shed 1 in the future.
“This development is a fantastic opportunity to maximize the potential of our waterfront. It’s a prime site that’s
close to town but has been significantly underutilized. We have the chance to not simply improve this part of Nelson
but most importantly connect it to the central City.”
Mayor Miccio says final drafts of the concept plan and drawings look incredible, and he looks forward to presenting them
at Friday’s Theatre Royal event. The event is open to all and starts at 5.00pm with a presentation at 5.30pm.
