Council’s fishy art competition returns
ROTORUA 28.08.13: After a year’s hiatus Rotorua District Council’s annual Fish Out of Water competition is back!
The community arts project requires “arty and crafty” people to decorate one-metre-long fibreglass fish, which are then
placed around the central city creating a ‘Fish Trail’. The public is invited to follow the trail and vote for their
favourite fish.
RDC community arts officer, Marc Spijkerbosch, said he encourages local people to help celebrate the city’s lakes and
fishery by entering the competition.
“There’s a limited number of fish available so people need to ‘bid’ for their fish. All they need to do is describe in
50 words or less how they are going to decorate their fish. We’re keen for bidders to let their imaginations run wild.
“Entries are becoming more and more creative each year as the competition’s popularity grows. Local people of all ages
are getting into the spirit of the event and are excited that their creations are on display seen by locals and visitors
to our city.”
The People’s Choice Award winner will receive a prize and a place in the ‘Fish Hall-of-Fame’ for permanent display
within the city. All finalists will receive framed certificates.

www.creativerotorua.org.nz.
Entries close 12 September, and the fish will be unveiled on 1 October – the opening day for the lakes fishing season.
