Disposal of bomb in Newtown
Wellington Police are supporting the New Zealand Defence Force as they
dispose of an ordnance discovered at a Boyd Street property in Newtown this morning.
The NZDF's assessment is that the device, believed to be an old artillery
shell, should be buried in near by McAllister Park before being detonated at
a time to be advised this afternoon.
Shift Commander Bruce Mackay says "We want to make people aware as there maybe some frazzled nerves in Wellington at the moment and we don't want people to be unnecessarily concerned".
"Our understanding is that noise may be substantial".
"Cordons will be in place however Police are asking people to stay away from the area".
