Northern Arena Press Release July 2013
Northern Arena’s charity for 2013 is Allergy New Zealand which came about as a result of becoming more aware of the seriousness of allergies and difficulties encountered by our patrons and staff. Whilst we understood that chlorine could affect sensitive skin we were not aware of the extent of the issue. Since opening in January 2011 we have had a lot of feedback regarding this matter, and how much better our pools are for our patrons and their children. This is due to the fact that we treat our water with ultra violet light, and as such we are able to use significantly less chlorine than typical pools.
We learnt more about Allergy New Zealand when Dean Kent, Head of Swimming at Northern Arena, became a father. His son Connor was born with an anaphylactic allergy to eggs and tree nuts, strong allergies to lamb, dairy and allergies to banana, wheat and dust resulting in major changes to his families diet, habits and lives in order to protect their son from the dangers involved.
Three time Olympian, new parent and Northern Arena Head of Swimming Dean Kent says “finding out Connor was allergic to egg, dairy, wheat, dust, nuts and bananas was life changing for us. Connors allergy’s mean our house is egg and nut free, although he still has episodes of eczema and itches if he comes in contact with anything he is allergic to. However if he eats egg he will have an anaphylactic reaction which could be life threatening - we always carry an Anapen to deal with this if it does happen”.
We as Northern Arena wanted to align ourselves selves with Allergy New Zealand as we became acutely aware of increased numbers of people living with allergies, in fact 1 in 3 people in Australia and New Zealand are affected at some time in their lives. The Team at Northern Arena felt Allergy New Zealand was a perfect fit with our principles and warranted more exposure and support where it would otherwise be overlooked and not considered a real problem. The marquee event for 2013 is a black tie event. Below you will find more details.
