Mayor welcomes backing for Auckland’s transport priorities
Mayor Len Brown has welcomed the government’s support for a number of Auckland's key transport projects, including the
City Rail Link, an additional harbour crossing and investments in Auckland’s state highway network.
“I’m delighted that the government is backing Auckland’s plan to meet its growth challenge,” Len Brown said.
“After two and a half years of amalgamation, Auckland is now speaking with one voice, and the government appears to be
listening.
“The commitments made today represent a big step forward - not only for Auckland but for the country as a whole.
“Auckland’s success is critical to New Zealand’s success. We are a third of the population, responsible for around 38
per cent of GDP, and the gateway for 70 per cent of visitors to New Zealand.
“It is not our size that is driving our need for infrastructure but our growth rate. Currently half of New Zealand’s
population growth is happening in Auckland. By 2030 it will as much as 70 per cent. It is critical that we make the
upfront investments in infrastructure to enable us to meet this challenge.
“Backing for the CRL in particular, is a major milestone. The CRL will double the capacity of Auckland’s existing rail
network and, when combined with new electric trains, will provide a major boost to economic growth in the CBD.
“Around 70 per cent of the funding for the CRL is now secured and work on options for the remaining funding – which will
be around $30 million a year – is underway. My focus will be on securing the best possible deal for Auckland.
“An additional harbour crossing will also be vital. I’m pleased that the government is backing the council’s preferred
option of a tunnel, which will secure the option of a rail link to the North Shore.
“I also welcome additional investment in the government’s state highway network in Auckland. We particularly need to
finish the Waterview Connection and AMETI with its East–West Link. While we are focussed on public transport, we need to
ensure investment that maintains a fully integrated transport system.”
