Maori Language Week - Te Reo at Voyager Maritime Museum

Voyager New Zealand Maritime Museum is to celebrate Wiki O Te Reo Maori Language Week (Monday 1 - Sunday 7 July, 9.00am-5.00pm) with a difference this year. Voyager’s theme for the week
has been conceptualized by Haare Williams, Voyager’s new Pae Arahi - Cultural Liaison. Haare is from Te
Aitanga-a-Mahaki, Tongowhakaata and Tuhoe tribes. He is an acclaimed broadcaster, poet, ‘eminent researcher’, scholar,
teacher and leader.
For every day of Maori Language Week you may visit Voyager and try your hand at Te Reo as you discover Taonga and
proverbs throughout the museum’s galleries. These Maori proverbs and their English translation are Haare’s contribution
and they embrace Maori wisdom in words and some relate beautifully to the sea. The trail is included in museum
admission, which is free for Auckland Residents.
On Sunday 7 July it’s Te Reo on board Ted Ashby. You will take to the sea and explore key Maori place names in the
Waitemata Harbour with Haare Williams as your host and narrator. This journey has an ideal synergy with the official
theme for the 2013 Maori Language Week that is ‘Nga ingoa Maori, Maori names’. The idea is that you would learn more
about names including place names and people. It also has relevance to the museum’s current exhibition Kupe’s Sites
which is dedicated to Maori landmarks and the names of these landmarks as discovered by Kupe.
