Mayor Hosting Wellington’s Talented Athletes
Her Worship Celia Wade-Brown the Mayor of Wellington will present certificates to young athletes involved in the
Wellington City Council Talent Development Programme on Tuesday 4 June.
The Council has partnered with Sport Wellington to deliver this programme which aims to increase the number of
Wellington sportspeople achieving international sporting success.
This programme aligns with the Council who want a successful city with successful sporting people. For Sport Wellington
this means more Wellingtonians succeeding on a world stage and for the athletes this investment is needed to assist them
realise their potential and move into the high performance environment.
The funding is used for athlete and coach development in areas including strength and conditioning, mental skills,
coaching workshops, personal development, and injury prevention and rehabilitation.
This is a partnership outline how the wider community is working together to help wellington athlete achieve success,
this includes Wellington City Council, Sport Wellington, High Performance Sport NZ , Sport NZ and Regional Sports
Organisations.
The programme funds talent development projects aligned to national or regional sports organisation development
pathways. It supports Sport New Zealand's (SNZ) approach to national talent development.
In attendance will be regional CEO’s / key drivers of each of the sports in the programme: Diving, Hockey, Netball,
Rugby League, Swimming and Yachting. Young athletes from each of these sports, some are in national squads, national
youth squads, Wellington senior teams and many compete at national champs. They aspire to compete at Olympics and World
Champs.
