Pressure main failure at Pump Station 36 on Pages Road

Pressure main failure at Pump Station 36 on Pages Road

A major wastewater pressure main failure at Pump Station 36 on Pages Road yesterday evening, Monday 22 April, has resulted in wastewater overflows into the Avon/Heathcote Estuary.

City Water and Waste Manager Mark Christison says, “Crews have worked through the night to repair the damage to the pressure main as quickly as possible. The majority of the overflow has ceased, but this station and pipeline remain fragile and it will be several weeks before repairs are complete at the Pump Station”.

The Pages Road pump station transfers much of the wastewater from the east of the city to the Christchurch Wastewater Treatment Plant for processing.

Procedures are being followed in response to the failure and Environment Canterbury has been notified of the need to overflow into the Estuary. Where appropriate, signage will be put up with public health information and directions to keep out of the water.
