Discover Moa with Local Film-maker at Dunedin City Library
Dunedin (Friday 22 March 2013) – Local documentary film-maker and author Quinn Berentson will be at Dunedin City Library on
Wednesday 27 March from 6.00pm, to talk about the life and death of the Moa, New Zealand’s legendary bird, and the
journey of discovery that drove him to write his book.
The Moa became extinct long before the arrival of European settlers to New Zealand, but historically, the Otago and
Canterbury regions were once thriving habitats for Moa. The Dunedin region, in particular, has become hugely important
for scientists and archaeologists as they uncover more information about these birds. Places such as Karitane are rich
with discoveries, and urban hot-spots such as the Esplanade at St Clair appear to have once been a popular place for
Māori to eat Moa and socialise - long before flat whites and cheese rolls became a dietary staple for the South Island.
When their bones were first re-discovered, this flightless giant took the world by storm, and skeletons and preserved
remains from our area were shipped to museums across the globe, where they continue to ‘wow’ millions of people every
year. For scientists, recent discoveries about Moa DNA are offering unprecedented insight into the evolution of the
species.
Berentson’s experience, as a writer, director and producer for companies such as Discovery Channel, Animal Planet and
National Geographic, have stood him in good stead for the intensive love and research that went onto producing his book.
His talk will delve into the world of the Moa – its way of life, appearance and evolution, as well as its demise - and
the feverish rivalry that was sparked between the explorers and scientists who re-discovered them. Audience members will
also learn about the myths and mysteries surrounding the bird – some of which persist to this day.
Book sales and signings will be available on the evening, and people are encouraged to book in advance to avoid
disappointment.
