Colombo Street to get vibrant revamp
Eye-catching road paint will help pave the way for the revival of Colombo Street.
Carolyn Ingles, Urban Regeneration Unit Manager, Christchurch City Council says “The temporary, but vibrant streetscape aims to support established businesses like Ballantynes and the arrival of new businesses.
“Colombo Street, between Hereford and Tuam Streets, is one of a number of streets and public spaces to receive a revamp over the coming months. The transitional phase provides an opportunity to test new ideas and concepts.”
Following completion of the revamp Colombo St between Lichfield St and Hereford St will come out of the Red Zone cordon (Rebuild Zone).
Painted road surfaces and colourful planter boxes will visually narrow the road and slow traffic to 30 km per hour.
Parking spaces will be retained and motorcycle parking and a night time taxi stand added. Existing seats will remain and extra bike stands will be incorporated in the transitional streetscape.
Construction of the temporary streetscape is expected to be completed next month. Generally the street will remain open during the construction period with some areas restricted in width to ensure a safe environment.
