Returning West Auckland’s streams to their former glory
La Rosa Gardens in Green Bay will be transformed into a vibrant recreation space for Aucklanders as part of a community
project launched on Saturday 23 February.
The project returns the Waitahurangi (Avondale) and Parahiku streams running through the Gardens to a more natural
state, resulting in a greater level of biodiversity and supported by a new wetland area, which will act as a natural
filter to limit the amount of pollution reaching the sea.
Mayor Len Brown says the project is a win for the community and the environment.
“It is great to see the council, environmental groups and communities working together on projects like this. The local
community will be able to enjoy a pleasant and attractive recreational area, while biodiversity gets a boost and the
area becomes a haven for native birds and plants,” says Len Brown.
Project manager and Senior Stormwater Project Engineer, Tom Mansell, says: “We’re removing the concrete pipes and
replanting the stream banks either side of the stream, as well as protecting the banks from erosion. This project is one
of many stream restoration projects underway in the city.
“Stream daylighting is about removing streams from lifeless underground pipes and restoring the streams ecosystems and
their capacity to manage high levels of rain water. It also about reconnecting people with the stream, by providing
walkways for visitors to the park to enjoy getting close to our unique natural environment. Projects like this help to
enrich the identity and well-being of our neighbourhoods and our communities,” he says.
As part of the community engagement programme, local residents will have the chance to connect with the restored stream
and with each other through tree-planting days, educational workshops, celebrations and community artworks.
