PRESS RELEASE: Go pink for Pinikilicious Day
22 February 2013
Pasifika women in Porirua are planning to dress in pink to support the Pinikilicious event tomorrow which honours and celebrates women of all ages and nationalities and urges them to recognise the importance of their health and wellbeing and to take action to ensure it.
Pinikilicious, an event campaign to improve the lives of women and girls in Porirua is an innovative approach to addressing the importance of women in communities and churches and carries out awareness health campaigns at the community level.
This event, the first of its kind has been coordinated by the Pinikilicious Organising Committee in association with the Mafutaga Ekalesia So’ofa’atasi Porirua (MESP), to pay tribute to women and to encourage women to take control of their health by making smart health choices, and to make time for themselves.
Caroline Mareko, event coordinator says the event’s focus is on women and also the necessity of tackling health issues. “Pinikilicious aims at targeting women in churches and communities to support them to have increased knowledge, skills and awareness on their health and wellbeing”. Pinikilicious Day is also designed to showcase the many women's health resources available through local organisations.
“The support of women from different religious denominations helps to champion this event , which will address major health challenges women are facing. It also attracts relevant organisations and government departments to work with us to engage and seek feedback from grassroots Pacific communities such as women’s organisations, local groups and churches, to effect change”.
The day will feature an array of activities from fitness talks, exercise demonstrations, health and beauty information workshops, to educational information about women's health and fitness.
Caroline says Pinkilicious is all about honouring women. “We are driven by the Samoan proverb “E au le inailau a tamaitai”, which means, women can achieve what they set out to do. The event also honours distinguished Pasifika Porirua women from the past and present”.
The Pinikilicious event day is held this Saturday, 23 February, 2013 at the E.F.K.S Porirua, 10 Waihemo Street, Waitangirua, Porirua from 9:00am – 3:00pm.
