Police secure scenes of Matamata shootings
Scene guards are in place at two addresses around Matamata this morning following shooting incidents in the area
overnight.
Waikato Field Crime Manager, Detective Inspector Karl Thornton, said emergency services were called to a Mowbray Rd
Waharoa address shortly after 11pm.
"A woman had rung 111 to report that her 20-year-old boyfriend had been shot by an offender who then fled the property
in a utility vehicle.
"Police secured the scene to allow ambulance staff to treat the victim who was then airlifted to Waikato Hospital where
he is currently in a critical but stable condition."
Mr Thornton said Police units, including the Waikato Armed Offenders Squad, then commenced searches of the area
including locations in and around Waharoa and Matamata.
"At about 3.20am officers located a deceased male at a Tower Rd Matamata address.
"The 21-year-old had suffered a gunshot wound and Police do not believe his death is suspicious. The investigation team
are not seeking anyone else in relation to either of the shootings and scene guards are in place at both addresses with
forensic examinations likely to commence at first light."
