Fatal crash in Napier follows street racing
Police are appealing for information from anyone who saw street racing in Napier last night following a fatal crash which claimed the life of an 18-year-old woman.
The victim has been named as Maree Schafer who died at the scene of the crash on Sandy Road, Meeanee, Napier at around 11.35pm last night.
Three vehicles - a silver Holden Commodore, a blue Ford Falcon and a grey Nissan Skyline - were street racing along Awatoto Road towards the intersection with Meeanee Road and Sandy Road.
The Commodore continued through the intersection at a speed well in excess of 100km/h.
The driver lost control of the vehicle and it slid sideways across the road, crashing side-on into a tree.
There were three occupants in the vehicle and Ms Schafer, the sole rear passenger, died at the scene.
The 18-year-old male who was driving and the 15-year-old front seat passenger suffered serious injuries and are currently being treated in Hawkes Bay Hospital.
