New Landfill Charges From 1 March
Dunedin, 19 February 2013 – Some charges at Dunedin City Council landfills are going up to cover the cost of rubbish disposal.
From 1 March, domestic charges will increase at the Green Island Landfill, Waikouaiti Landfill and the Middlemarch Transfer Station. The level of increase is based on vehicle type and size.
For a standard car, this means an increase of $1.80 (from $16.20 currently to $18 from 1 March).
Staff reviewed the fees and charges last year and changes were discussed and approved by the Dunedin City Council during its 2013/14 pre-Draft Annual Plan meetings in January.
DCC Solid Waste Manager Ian Featherston says Green Island Landfill revenue has been below budget in this financial year, with a 20% shortfall between the revenue received from domestic customers and the cost of waste disposal.
Changes in October 2011 to the traffic layout at the Green Island Landfill, which separated the recycling area, meant staff could gather more accurate information about costs and charges.
The 1 March changes do not apply to refuse bag and commercial charges, which remain the same.
There may be further changes to landfill charges as part of the 2013/14 Draft Annual Plan process.
