Further Water Restrictions As Dams Recede
Water restrictions on residential sprinklers have been tightened as Gisborne’s water consumption continues to rise.
Residential sprinklers can now only be used on Monday, Wednesday and Friday between 6pm and 8pm.
The water restrictions imposed at the end of January have had little effect on the city’s water demand, says Gisborne District Council water team leader Marcus Koll. “Recent rain has not reduced city consumption or slowed the decrease of dam levels at Mangapoike, our main water source. The Waipaoa Water Treatment Plant is currently in standby operation and will be delivering water to the city early next week to slow the decrease of dam levels.”
“Apart from the very high residential consumption mainly because of increased garden irrigation, the major factor is that February and March are the biggest months for water usage with all the major harvesters and food processors in full production. Consequently we needed to move to a higher level of water restriction.”
“The use of sprinklers is being monitored. If you see your neighbours wasting water please remind them that we all need to help prevent further restrictions by conserving water now.”
